Expansion of rail capacity is one of the highlights of the 2015-15 Railway Budget, presented in Parliament today by the Minister of Railways, Suresh Prabhu.
The Railway Budget plans to to expand the railway’s capacity substantially and modernise its infrastructure. Some of the targets include:
- Increasing daily passenger carrying capacity from 21 million to 30 million
- Increasing the track length by 20 per cent from from 1,14,000 km to 1,38,000 km, and,
- Improving the annual freight carrying capacity from 1 billion to 1.5 billion tonnes.
