Dynastic politics has been described by many as a source of tension within Indian democracy. However, an emphasis on family ties has also allowed powerful women candidates to emerge. These women are typically wives, daughters and daughters-in-law of prominent male politicians. While their entry into politics was facilitated because of dynasty, they have also emerged as representatives of the people in their own right and have managed to take centre stage in their constituencies banking on the political capital available to them through the politically prominent men in their lives. In this photo essay, we present some dynastic female politicians, who are currently contesting for the 16th Lok Sabha elections from various parts of India. Text: Vasundhara Sirnate and Ruchika Singh
