There is always an air of mystery surrounding India’s Northeast. Not only are the eight States linguistically diverse, each has a distinct political history as well. On April 7, the first day of the Indian general elections, voters in six parliamentary constituencies (one in Tripura and five in Upper Assam) exercised their franchise. The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy presents a compilation of electoral action from the Northeast on the first day of polling and the hectic political activities in the preceeding weeks.
