The largest, the toughest, the longest, the dirtiest ... These are some of the adjectives that were associated with the 2014 General Elections in India, which came to a close on May 12. Close to 67 per cent of the country’s 81.45 crore (814 million) eligible voters, according to provisional figures, exercised their franchise in the polls that spread a little over a month, making it the highest polling percentage in Indian elections thus far. On the last day, polls were held for 41 parliamentary seats in three states. The eyes of India’s 121-crore population, and the rest of the world, will now be on May 16, when the results of this mammoth exercise would be declared. The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy presents a slideshow of the final day’s polling. Text: Saptarshi Bhattacharya
